Scope and Contents

Account of a journey through Am Muile/Isle of Mull in which Carmichael describes being in the company of a geologist from London, and the views down the mountain track to Loch Scridain and Loch Ba, and observing a large cairn 'evidently the result of funerals' and a very yellow frog near the summit. He describes the view to loch Ba as 'glorious in the bright sun after the rain the grass sparkline in the sun and every rill laughed gach caochain sa ghleann ri gaire.'

Account of a trip to Ìle/ Islay entitled 'Iain Og Ile' in which Alexander Carmichael describes how he travelled there and his meeting with the Marquis of Lorne before the inauguration of the monument to Iain Òg Ìle [John Francis Campbell of Islay]. He notes the afterdinner speakers, describing his own speech as 'a bungled affair', and also describes Islay House, noting the gardener as Thomas Hill and his connections with the Campbells of Islay.

Scope and Contents Story probably collected from Roderick MacNeil, aged 88, crofter, Miùghlaigh/Mingulay which tells how MacLean of Duart's daughter was married to MacNeil of Barra that they did not get on together. They travelled to see her father in Am Muile/Isle of Mull but on their return she asked to stop in the Sound of Mull/An Caol Muileach to collect some dulse. When she was ashore MacNeil abandoned her and she was drowned on the rocks. On his return home, MacNeil married the daughter of Fear-Chean...

Fragment of a story which tells how Ulva [probably MacQuarrie or Macquarie] often swam to Innis [Inch Keneth] to see a girl and on one occasion he found a bull stranded on a rock, so he pushed it back into the water. The part of the story which deals with the girl's reaction is in poor handwriting making it difficult to understand but it would appear to relate to her relationship with MacQuarrie.

Journal account of a journey around Glen Nevis with Bail[li]e John Maccallum [Baillie John MacCallum] on 28 September 1890. The account tells how they went to see 'old Ionnor Lochaidh Castle', Banaovi, then 'with a carriage and pair' to Glenevis to the head of Glen. One half around Ben-nevis [Banavie/Banbhaidh, Beinn Nibheis/Ben Nevis, all Earra Ghàidheal/Argyllshire]. Carmichael remarks 'Magnificent scenery. The nevis runs level and land on either bank level for many miles.'
